Perhaps the transient nature of our modern lives is a factor as well.

I've heard it explained this way: "It takes a long time to make old friends."

Good point! Personally, I am going to keep interacting with neighbors, and you are right that it will take a long time and many interactions for those neighbors to become old friends.
